How BaptistCare has created a very special community

I’m often asked what makes BaptistCare such a trusted operator of retirement villages – it’s a question I can answer with confidence. As one of Australia’s leading Christian organisations since 1944, BaptistCare has long been a trusted provider of retirement living, home care and residential aged care services – and that history runs deep in Canberra.

In 1968, BaptistCare opened one of this city’s first aged care homes on the site that Yarra Rossa is now being constructed. This ushered in a new era of care to seniors in the ACT, a legacy that Yarra Rossa is set to continue, backed by the financial strength and asset base of BaptistCare.

If you’re considering a move to a BaptistCare retirement village, here are some of the qualities that make this organisation so special.

Strong relationships

A sure sign you’re dealing with a trustworthy organisation is when there isn’t a great deal of staff turnover. I’ve always been impressed by the way BaptistCare tends to retain its village staff for long periods of time – and that consistency helps residents feel secure and settled. Here at BaptistCare, our village managers have an average tenure of a decade, whereas other retirement communities nationally tend to cycle through managers every 2-3 years.

Sense of community

I love hearing from future residents about how much they’re looking forward to being part of a caring community. Many residents from our existing villages have remarked that it reminds them of the friendly neighbourhoods they grew up in, where everyone looked out for each other. That sense of belonging and camaraderie in BaptistCare villages is really special. Friendships are formed quickly, and even residents who might not have thought of themselves as outgoing find themselves joining groups and taking up new hobbies in no time at all.

Financial benefits

Understandably, many people have concerns about the financial aspects of moving into a retirement community. It’s reassuring to learn that BaptistCare offers full transparency about the costs involved in moving to retirement villages – there are no hidden trapdoors. BaptistCare also provides two helpful financial supports:

  • If you’ve applied for a government-subsidised Home Care Package, it can take time to get approval. BaptistCare allows you draw down on the funds from your entry payment while you wait for that approval – up to $30,000 for up to two years.
  • If you need to move into Residential Aged Care down the track, not only will your Retirement Village refund be fast-tracked, you’ll receive a 10% discount on the price of your accommodation bond. This helps ease a transition that might otherwise induce extra stress.
